Gencerling – The Environmentally Conscious Generation

Environmentally Smart Generation is a program developed to raise awareness among Indonesian children about water resilience and related issues, while also preparing them to face climate change.

The program was initiated by the Collective for Climate, Environment, and Sustainability (CEST) Indonesia, formerly known as Kajian Ufuk Indonesia (KUI), in collaboration with Danone Indonesia and LEMTEK Universitas Indonesia.

The program began with the development of five learning modules, designed to equip teachers with the tools to teach water resilience to elementary school students. These modules were developed by experts and teachers based on the P5 curriculum in 2024.

  1. Kisah Air Dalam Hidupku – Fase A
  2. Aku Sang Pahlawan Air – Fase A
  3. Laskar Air – Fase B
  4. Bersama Menjaga Air – Fase C
  5. Aksi Hemat Air di Sekolah – Fase C
  6. Buku Edukasi Air

Modules are accessible for public use.

It’s also available on the Usaha Kesehatan Sekolah/Madrasah website, under ‘Guided Books’. Link here.

The five modules, along with lessons on citizen journalism, were taught to 100 teachers, who were then tasked with cascading the knowledge to other teachers and eventually to students. As of June 2025, a total of 669 teachers and 8,502 students had participated. Maximum impact was achieved when the program was supported and integrated into the official school curriculum.

The results of this outreach took the form of student and teacher projects related to water knowledge, which were uploaded to the website gencerling.com. Student works were submitted from across the country—from Aceh to Papua. By July 24, 2025, a total of 523 works had been uploaded, despite challenges like limited internet access and mobile data in remote areas of Indonesia.

Moving forward, the top 100 works will be selected for display in a virtual exhibition, where the best student projects and outstanding teachers in water resilience education will be recognized.

The series of activities will culminate in a celebration titled:
“The Story of a Drop of Water: Flowing Inspiration, Celebrating Change” on October 10, 2025.
